Would we lose control of our fishing grounds?

No. We'd negotiate a permanent share of fishing quotas before joining. The Marine Research Institute's advice should determine total catches. And we'd need to retain the existing exemption on foreign ownership of fishing companies.

Would foreign trawlers get to fish in our waters?

The EU's quota system doesn't give other countries' fleets automatic access to our waters. Quotas are allocated to member states, not to individual boats. How we manage fishing within our zone — including who gets to fish there — would remain our decision.

What about our marine resources — aren't they at risk?

No. The EU has no mechanism to take ownership of any member state's natural resources. Our seabed, geothermal vents, and marine ecosystems stay ours — just as Denmark's North Sea oil, Sweden's mines, and Finland's forests have stayed theirs.

Would food become cheaper?

Almost certainly, and significantly. EU membership would open our market to European food at much lower tariffs. Dairy, meat, vegetables, and processed food would all come down in price. The harder question is what that means for our farmers.

What would the euro mean for my wallet?

Lower interest rates, cheaper mortgages, and an end to the inflation rollercoaster. We've had the highest interest rates in Western Europe for decades. Inside the eurozone, we'd borrow at rates most Europeans take for granted — and mortgage debt would never again balloon overnight because of a currency crash.

Would we have to pay other European countries' debts?

No. The EU Treaty explicitly prohibits it. Article 125 — the "no bailout clause" — says no member state is liable for another's debts. Our national debt would remain ours, and Greece's would remain Greece's.

Would we be flooded with immigrants?

We're already part of Schengen, the EEA's labour mobility framework, and the Dublin Regulation on asylum. EU workers can already move here — and they're a vital part of our workforce. EU membership wouldn't change who can come. What it would add is a vote in shaping migration and asylum policy, which we currently have no say in.

Would anything change about freedom to travel?

Very little for most people. We're already in the Schengen area, so passport-free travel across Europe is a reality. The main change would be at the cargo level — joining the customs union would eliminate border checks on goods, making trade simpler and cheaper.

Would we lose our sovereignty?

We'd share decision-making on certain issues — but gain voting rights and direct influence over rules that already apply to us through the EEA. The real question is whether having a vote on the rules that shape our lives is more or less sovereignty than the current arrangement.

Yes — and more than we have now. We'd have a seat in every room where decisions are made: the Council, the Parliament, the Commission. Right now, through the EEA, we adopt most EU law with no vote at all. The real choice is between influence with a vote and influence without one.

Isn't it just the "commissars in Brussels" who run the EU?

No — that's one of the most persistent myths about the EU. Every EU law must be approved by elected ministers from each member state and by the directly elected European Parliament. The Commission proposes legislation — it doesn't decide it. We'd have our own people in every institution where decisions are made.

Isn't the EU behind us on environmental issues?

In some ways, but not across the board. We lead on renewable energy and fisheries sustainability. But the EU has moved ahead on biodiversity, pollution control, circular economy, and climate targets. Membership would strengthen our framework in areas where we currently lag.

Could the EU force us to sell Landsvirkjun or our energy resources?

No. The EU Treaty explicitly protects each member state's sovereignty over its natural resources and energy mix. France fully nationalised EDF in 2023. Sweden's Vattenfall is 100% state-owned. EU membership does not require privatisation of anything.

About 70% of the EU's domestic regulatory framework is already Icelandic law. The single market, competition rules, environmental standards, transport, energy, financial services, workers' rights — all already in place. What remains is mostly agriculture, fisheries, customs, taxation, and the euro.
