About

Iceland and Europe is a personal project by Vilhjálmur Þorsteinsson. Its aim is to give Icelanders — and anyone interested — access to clear, honest answers to the most common questions about Iceland's potential EU membership.

On 29 August 2026, Icelanders will vote in a national referendum on whether to resume accession negotiations with the European Union. It is important that voters have access to reliable information to make an informed decision.

How the site works

The site presents readable “cards” that answer each question in two steps: first a concise answer in a few sentences, then a link to a longer answer with references and context. Cards are organised by topic — fisheries, agriculture, the economy, sovereignty, and more.

The cards are designed to be easy to share on social media. You can copy a link, download an image, or share directly from the page.

Open source

The source code and all content are open on GitHub. This is a deliberate choice: transparency is a prerequisite for credibility. If you spot an error, want to suggest a correction, or add content, please submit a pull request or open an issue.

Principles

The project strives to be balanced and factual. The cards do not tell people how to vote — they aim to give voters the best available information to make their own decision. Where opinions are divided, the main arguments on both sides are presented with references.

This project is 100% funded and operated by Vilhjálmur Þorsteinsson and is not affiliated with any political party, interest group, or institution, domestic or foreign. Social media advertisements are labelled in accordance with platform rules on political content.
