About
Iceland and Europe is a personal project by Vilhjálmur Þorsteinsson. Its aim is to give Icelanders — and anyone interested — access to clear, honest answers to the most common questions about Iceland's potential EU membership.
On 29 August 2026, Icelanders will vote in a national referendum on whether to resume accession negotiations with the European Union. It is important that voters have access to reliable information to make an informed decision.
How the site works
The site presents readable “cards” that answer each question in two steps: first a concise answer in a few sentences, then a link to a longer answer with references and context. Cards are organised by topic — fisheries, agriculture, the economy, sovereignty, and more.
The cards are designed to be easy to share on social media. You can copy a link, download an image, or share directly from the page.
Facts and references
All text is written and reviewed both by the editor (Vilhjálmur) and with the help of AI (Claude Opus 4.6 from Anthropic). The final version of each card is always fact-checked using Google Gemini Pro 3.1 AI with access to web search (Google Search Grounding), which also collects references for the reference list.
Principles
The project strives to be neutral and objective, yet rather optimistic and positive than pessimistic and negative.
The cards do not tell people how to vote — they aim to give voters the best available information to make their own decision. Where opinions are divided, the main arguments on both sides are presented with references.
